Posted on August 31, 2010

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has renamed the Ministry of Health Promotion to include ‘Sport.’ The new name is the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport.

In a press release announcing the name change (August 23, 2010), the Minister of Health Promotion and Sport, Margarett Best, made these comments:

“...I am personally pleased and delighted that the Premier has taken this significant step. I believe our new name more accurately reflects the balanced and broad approach of our Ministry’s work to date. Sport plays a fundamental role in supporting Ontario athletes from playgrounds to podiums on the national and international stages. This change reaffirms our commitment to building healthier communities.

...In building momentum towards the 2015 Toronto Pan/Parapan American Games, the Ministry will take significant steps to support and strengthen sport and recreational programs. We are also working on a focused sport agenda to strengthen Ontario’s culture of sport and better support our athletes so they can achieve their full potential and perform at their best at home and abroad.”
