Exercise for Recovery

LOFT Community Services (St. George House) is a non-profit boarding home for adults living with mental health disorders.

St. George House's 'Exercise for Recovery' group provides one-on-one and group assistance to individuals wishing to construct weekly exercise plans that will promote a healthy lifestyle and facilitate recovery. We work with residents to create basic, but effective workout schedules that will produce results.

Our exercise program runs weekly and is flexible around residents' schedules. Our training program consists of a cardio exercise bike that each resident uses for a maximum of 25 minutes, depending on the individual. Along with that residents do a variety of stretching exercises. We also encourage and assist residents to do crunches and push-up exercises. In the near future, we hope to be receiving a wide range of free weights which would help us increase our depth of training. Throughout the year, we incorporate group walks into the program. St. George House's 'Exercise for Recovery' group has been popular since it began in January 2010. Motivation to participate in these training groups has been on the rise as our residents have been seeing encouraging, positive results.

Throughout the training process residents are provided with nutritional advice and we encourage residents to monitor their portion sizes. Several residents at St. George House have been diagnosed with either type I or type II diabetes, and benefit from our support and assistance in maintaining normal blood sugar levels.

I think that one of our greatest challenges is access to the right resources to enhance our current program. We have had some initial success with our program as more residents are participating and getting involved. Witnessing positive results from this program have encouraged other residents to step up to the challenge. All of us here at St. George House feel that by adding more fitness resources we will see greater participation in the program. Our efforts are directed to promoting a healthier lifestyle which enables residents to take a big step toward the recovery process.
