Through funding from the Communities in Action Fund (Ministry of Health Promotion), I facilitate a weekly fitness clinic at several Canadian Mental Health Association locations in the Grey Bruce, Ontario region. The activities include: a mini-stretch and/or yoga session for stress relief and relaxation, a walk in the neighborhood, one-on-one fitness assessments, exercise modification (ie, for arthritis, limited range of motion, etc), personalized plan of action, workshops on motivation, health benefits of activity and nutrition.
I offer sessions on specific topics as applicable, such as seasonal affective disorder, exercise for diabetes and arthritis, and nutrition.
I plan the activities based on the needs of each group. At one location, the participants began their own weekly Stretch Group, using the exercises and guidance they received at our weekly sessions.
There are challenges around illness (eg, negative reaction to medicine or arthritic flare up) which affects adherence to the assigned fitness regimen between our weekly sessions.
The successes of the program are expressed by people who report feeling better as a result of increased activity, and who are very pleased to report their own progress each week.
