Sunset Country Psychiatric Survivors is a consumer/survivors initiative where our members have a mental illness. Our Older Adult Active Living Program provides bowling and other activities to older adults who are suffering from a range of issues such as isolation, depression, anxieties, etc.
Every week we host free, drop-in activities for people to attend and socialize with peers as well as volunteers. Bowling, swimming, cards and refreshments are available depending on individual preference.
We currently offer peer support through peer interaction and we encourage anyone with mental illnesses or families to attend. All our workers and members have input into the planning and delivery of this program. Informal training by staff and volunteers takes place through behaviour modeling to support people towards recovery.
We have challenges in recruitment since it can be difficult to convince people to make the first step of making the initial drop-in. Once people attend they tend to return. Transportation is also a challenge.
We have partnered with the Older Adult Program, the Focus Coalition, the Indian Friendship Center in order to attract new participants. Our local mining company has supported us by providing building space, free of charge.
