PQCHC is an innovative community-based, multi-service centre. We strive to meet the needs of the diverse communities we serve. We work in partnership with individuals, families and communities to achieve their full potential, paying particular attention to those who are most vulnerable and at risk. Together we seek to build a safe, just and healthy community for all.
As a mental health outreach worker at a community centre I run multiple programs. I run an adult drop-in group that is based on social activity but also aims to contribute to physical fitness, health and wellness. We meet every Wednesday and there is always an activity that involves healthy eating, physical wellness or physical activity. I also help run a yoga group once a month at an Ottawa Community Housing building and plan on beginning a walking club at the community building in the spring which will run twice a month.
At the drop-in, we offer education on healthy meal preparation and education about the Canadian food guide. We have a nurse come in once a year to discuss diabetes, nutrition and other health promotions like falls prevention.
We encourage clients to continue activities in their homes and with other individuals in the community without the support of a worker.
Among the challenges for our program, it is difficult to find individuals willing to donate their time on a consistent basis. We also lack funding for things like yoga mats and other physical activity monitoring devices. We can see success among the many individuals losing weight and being better able to manage their health conditions.
